I’m not shocked. I remember being back from college in 1983. My brother, then a senior in high school, and I were trying to imitate the MJ Moonwalk. My dad, who graduated high school in 1955 and college in 1959 and was (and still is) a pretty fair dancer, sees us trying and goes, “No, it’s like this.” And busts out a pretty much perfect moonwalk, the exact same move Michael did. This amazed and amused us. It never occurred to us that Michael didn’t invent that move, so we couldn’t figure out how he could have seen it, let alone perfected it. “Dad, have you been watching MTV in secret?” “No,” he said, “lots of people did that move when I was a teenager, and I’m sure way before that.” He taught us to do a half decent moonwalk ourselves.
