Artists: think like a small business.

In some ways artists, musicians, painters, and others creative professionals are in a state of denial about treating their activities like a small business.  Some think that if they ignore certain business facets of their careers, they will just sort themselves out (they usually won’t)  or that if they do pay attention to the bottom line, their art will suffer (it won’t).
Granted, tending to the business side of an arts career does take some time out of your day, Read more

Transforming Culture

Recently NPR’s Studio 360  aired a piece about an artist named Robert Fontenot who purchased textiles and other materials from an auction at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The pieces he procured included Guatemalan, Indian and Korean textiles, traditional ethnic clothing and craft pieces as well as some historic designer clothing made by well known designers. What has caused many people to take notice of Mr. Fontenot’s Read more

RIP Vibe

Just saw an article on the New York Times Web site about the demise of Vibe Magazine.  The news of a magazine going under in the current economic climate is not surprising, but when it is a magazine that has helped to legitimize rap, hip hop and R&B into household genres, then it is worth lamenting the demise of a source of urban music and culture critical review.
Back when Vibe was founded in the early 1990s-before our current generation Read more

The Price is Right, Come on Down!

I was able to sit in this morning on a workshop presented by the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC).  The module revolved around pricing structures for artists and the arts community, and how we all can apply typical pricing strategies from the corporate world to our own artistic careers.  The presenter this morning was Michael V. Marn, Director of Pricing Services for McKinsey & Company, Inc.  Michael led Read more

Another Reason to Love Cleveland!

Earlier this morning I attended a reception hosted by the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC) to announce the 2009 class of Creative Workforce Fellowships.  Each of the group of 20 artists, which included painters, sculptors, filmmakers, and designers, will receive a $20,000 grant to be used as the artists see fit to further their careers and artistic projects, a free year’s membership in the COSE Arts Network, and access to business-management training Read more

hoops and jazz

I like most sports, and growing up I was a huge fan of all the Cleveland sports teams, including my favorite, the indoor soccer team the Cleveland Force.  I’ve watched live the majority of the Cleveland sports “disasters,” conveniently rubbed in when  the Cavaliers were recently ousted from the NBA Playoffs.  This year’s loss in the Eastern Conference Championship is now the most recent on that list of failures, and yet another reason it is so Read more

Local Experts to Address Arts Media in NE Ohio

Many artists and performers in our area have lamented the diminishing amount of newspaper space and other media coverage dedicated to the visual and performing arts.  It is certainly not news that the newspaper industry is reeling, and in many cases arts and culture coverage is amongst the first to be affected by shrinking column space and thinning papers.  Much of radio is dominated by corporate-owned stations, and outside of Read more

Wind of Change: the Design of Wind Energy

The theme being addressed by the bloggers of Geniocity this week is wind energy, and how the idea of establishing this renewable energy in our area would affect the community and businesses of Northeast Ohio.  It is hard to argue against the need for renewable energy sources, and in many parts of the world wind farms have become a legitimate option for generating electricity.  The United States is actually the Read more

Cezanne for Sale

A Proposed Museums Bill in the New York State Legislature seeks to impose limits on how a museum’s collection can be used as collateral to generate revenue. Specifically the Bill seeks to make it illegal for any museum to sell artwork in order to use the money for overhead, operational or facilities costs. The argument by those who support the Bill is that deaccessioning collections is not a valid way Read more
