Local Experts to Address Arts Media in NE Ohio
Many artists and performers in our area have lamented the diminishing amount of newspaper space and other media coverage dedicated to the visual and performing arts. It is certainly not news that the newspaper industry is reeling, and in many cases arts and culture coverage is amongst the first to be affected by shrinking column space and thinning papers. Much of radio is dominated by corporate-owned stations, and outside of NPR affiliates and college stations, it is very hard to find arts coverage in that format as well. As the manner in which Americans consume news and information shifts from traditional forms to online and social media outlets, many feel left out when looking for serious, intelligent critical arts review and feature pieces. More so than ever, artists, performers and musicians are left wondering where they can promote their work and get it reviewed, and how to keep up with the changes in format and technology that inform how the media is digested by the general public. Media relations, promotion and publicity are essential areas to any arts entrepreneur, and on June 10th COSE will help address some of these issues.
The COSE Arts Network will host a panel discussion to discover ways artists can best use the media to promote their careers, shows and activities. Panelists will address the current state of arts media and critical review in Northeast Ohio and their experiences at some of the most prominent media organizations in the area.
The presentation, entitled “Meet the Press” includes the following panelists: Dave DeOreo, WVIZ/WCPN ideastream; Michael Gill, Scene Magazine; Carolyn Jack, Geniocity.com; and Steven Litt, Cleveland Plain Dealer.
